Get to know your grill's thermocouple.

WHAT IS A THERMOCOUPLE?

A thermocouple is a 1" metal rod used in WiFIRE-enabled grills, which acts as a sensor to measure the grill's temperature. Thermocouples are susceptible to temperature and tampering, so you want to ensure you do not touch them while using the grill.

THERMOCOUPLE STYLE/LOCATION

The style of the grill will dictate its location inside the grill.

  • Costco Grills: The thermocouple will be sitting vertically next to the bottom grill grate on the hopper grill side.

  • Non-Costco Grills: The thermocouple will be sticking out of the barrel wall horizontally on the hopper side.

Thermocouples on new grills have a protective covering on them to prevent damage during shipping. Grills manufactured after mid-2021 have a cardboard covering, whereas grills manufactured before then have an orange, plastic one. These coverings must be removed before use. If you forgot to remove the orange plastic before seasoning your grill, and the plastic has melted onto the thermocouple, contact Customer Support. If the cardboard one did not burn off during seasoning, remove it--keeping it on can cause temperature issues.
