Error: 0002 | ER02 | Low Temp Error

What's in This Article?

What to do if your WiFIRE-enabled Traeger pellet grill displays a Low Temp Error.

What happens when this error occurs?

Depending on which grill you have, a Low Temp Error may also show on your grill's controller as, Error: 0002 Low Temp Error, or ER02. If the grill is paired with the Traeger app, it will also trigger a notification from the app.

Low Temp Error.png

The grill triggers this error when its temperature falls below 120ºF/48ºC for more than 10 minutes. Once triggered, the grill will attempt to reignite. If the reignition attempt is unsuccessful, the grill will automatically start its shutdown cycle.

What causes these errors?

The potential causes of a low temp error may vary, depending on the type of grill you have.

  • Outdated firmware
  • Wet, old, or low-quality pellets
  • No pellets in the firepot (usually caused by running out of pellets mid-cook, an auger jam, or not priming the auger on a brand-new grill)
  • Too many pellets in the firepot
  • Poor air flow (usually as a result of lack of maintenance, ash and sawdust buildup, chimney height, or other blockers like loose drip tray liners or large pans)
  • Starting the grill with the lid open
  • Cold or windy weather
  • Component failure
  • The grill has run out of pellets.
  • The fan is not working properly.
  • The pellets are not igniting.
  • The connectors on the motherboard or controller are partially disconnected.

What to Do

Select your grill below for the next steps.

Safety Considerations:

  • The internal components of the grill may still be hot after a full cooldown. Proceed with caution.
  • If pellets are lit, hot or "smoking", in the firepot, allow them to get cold before removing. Proceed with caution.

Steps

1. Assess the situation

Think about timing of the error, age of grill, amount of use, if other errors also appeared, etc.

    • New grill, first time being used: Did you prime your auger before use?
    • Error occurred before reaching set temp: Too many pellets from improper shutdown; hot rod not heating; sawdust in auger tube;
    • Error occurred after reaching temp (mid-cook): Pellets aren't reaching the firepot; high winds extinguishing fire; air flow being blocked
    • Other errors also occurred: Other errors can indicate other issues like an auger jam or a component not being connected
    • Cold or windy weather: High winds occasionally have impact on the grill's ability to maintain a fire; extremely cold weather can impact time to temp.
    • Correct startup procedure: The most common fix for a Low Temp Error is to restart your grill correctly.
WiFIRE-enabled (or D2) grills need to be started and preheated with the lid closed. Failure to start the grill correctly can result in temperature irregularities throughout a cook. Follow these steps to ignite your D2 WiFIRE pellet grill correctly:
      1. Turn on your grill.
      2. Ensure your grill's lid is closed.
      3. Set the desired grill temperature.
      4. Press Ignite.

2. Check your grill's firmware

  1. Find the latest firmware version for your model at https://www.traeger.com/status.
  2. Find your own grill's firmware version and make sure it's on the latest version.
  3. Leave your grill connected to WiFi and it should update automatically, if needed.

3. Check Pellets

  1. Did the grill run out of pellets at any point?
    • If the grill ran out of pellets part way through a cook, there may have been a gap in the auger where no pellets reached the firepot for a period of time. See How to Prime an Auger
  2. Check pellet quality.
Try checking pellets near the bottom of the hopper since those are the pellets closest to those that would be in the firepot.
  3. Check for and remove any excess sawdust at the bottom of the hopper.
    • Pro Tip: When cleaning your grill, always empty your hopper and vacuum out any residual sawdust that has settled on the bottom, so the sawdust doesn't make its way into the firepot.
  4. Check pellets in the firepot.
    1. Remove the grill grates, drip tray, and heat baffle, looking for possible air flow obstructions such as loose drip tray liners, large pans, and excessive ash and sawdust in the barrel.
    2. Check pellet quality and amount in the firepot.
      • No pellets indicate a gap in the auger from running out of pellets, a blockage in the hopper preventing pellets from entering the auger (pellet clumps), or an auger jam.
      • Too many pellets indicate the fire likely got smothered or couldn't establish in the first place. Possible causes could be improper shutdown on the previous cook or the hot rod not heating.

4. Check Maintenance

An unmaintained grill can lead to difficulty getting a grill to the correct temperature. Ash buildup, particularly in the firepot, reduces the hotrod's ability to bring pellets to its smoking point efficiently.

We recommend cleaning your grill a minimum of every 20 hours of cooking, but we suggest cleaning it more often. Ash buildup will also affect the grill's ability to circulate heat efficiently, which will prevent the grill from being able to maintain the set temperature.

For more information on cleaning your pellet grill, see Cleaning & Maintaining a Pellet Grill.

5. Check Component Functionality

  1. If your grill has a chimney, make sure there is approximately a thumb's space between the chimney pipe and cap.
  2. With the grates, drip tray and heat baffle removed, plug in and ignite the grill.
  3. As the grill ignites, check if the following components are working as designed:
    1. Auger: Should be turning, feeding pellets into the firepot.
    2. Induction Fan: Should be running. You should hear the fan's low hum, likely turning on and off. You can also feel for airflow coming from the firepot by hovering your hand over it, or you can remove your hopper's service panel and visually check if the fan is spinning.
    3. Hot Rod: Should produce heat, which you can feel by hovering your hand over the firepot.

Applicable Grills

Steps

  1. Check your grill's pellet level in your hopper.
  2. Check your grill's firmware to make sure it's on the latest version.
  3. Have the pellets run out? If they have:
    • Add pellets to the hopper and run the Prime Auger action from the controller. See How to Prime an Auger
  4. Check your pellet quality, preferably taking a sample from the bottom of your hopper or from the end of your auger tube next to the firepot.
    • Pellets should have a nice sheen and "snap" when broken in half. Dull, crumbling, or swollen/moisture-exposed pellets won't ignite.
    • Look for sawdust at the bottom of the hopper and in the auger.
  5. Remove the grates, drip tray, and manifold to check the pellets in the firepot and to make sure the firepot is installed correctly.
    1. Check pellet quality and quantity in the firepot, looking for things like sawdust and ash, clumped pellets and any obstruction of the ignitor and air holes.
    2. Check if pellets are at the end of the auger as an indicator of pellets running out mid-cook, an auger jam, or clumped pellets.
  6. Was there strong wind when the error triggered?
This error can trigger when winds stronger than 30 mph are blowing into the downdraft exhaust for longer than 10 minutes.
    • If so, the error should clear once restarted. Position the grill so the exhaust is facing toward a wall or at least so the wind is not blowing directly into the downdraft exhaust.
  7. Did you allow the grill to shut down correctly on the last cook?
    • An incomplete shutdown cycle will affect your grill's next cook.
  8. Plug in and turn on the grill.
    • The Low Temp Error should be cleared at this time.
  9. Run a SELF-TEST and Part Diagnosis to ensure all parts are communicating with the motherboard correctly and are not triggering any other errors.
    • On the controller display, go to MENU > MAINTENANCE & CARE > SELF-TEST.
  10. Confirm the hot rod is heating.
    1. Ignite the grill.
    2. Hover your hand over the firepot to feel for heat.
  11. If all checks out, the grill is ready to cook again.

Steps

  1. Prepare the grill:
    • Ensure the grill is cool and finished with its shutdown cycle.
    • Ensure there are pellets in the hopper, add pellets to the hopper (if needed).
    • Open grill and remove the grates, drip tray, and manifold.
  2. Inspect the firepot:
    1. Check for blockage and excessive debris that can prevent the grill from maintaining a flame.
    2. Check the firepot for ash pucks, excessive pellets, sawdust, or debris. All of these can block the holes in the firepot that provide oxygen to the fire.
    3. Clean out the firepot. This is most easily done with a shop vac.
  3. Set a temperature and ignite the grill:
    1. Check to ensure there are pellets feeding into the firepot.
    2. Check the pellet quality.
      • Pellets should be shiny and snap easily.
      • Pellets should not be wet or crumbled.
    3. If the pellets are not feeding into the firepot, run the auger priming cycle.
    4. Allow enough time for pellets to go from the hopper to the firepot.
  4. Check the following components:
    1.  Auger: Check to see if the auger is spinning (on and off, not continuously).
    2. Fan:
      • Hover your hand over the firepot and see if there is heat.
      • Listen for the fan running.
      • Check for a light breeze from the fan.
    3. Ignitor: Check to see if the pellets are smoking.
  5. If all components in step 4 are working correctly, stop here. You have resolved the issue.
If any or all of the components listed in step 4 are not working correctly, continue.

Next Steps If Components Aren't Working Correctly

  1. Prepare the grill to trouble shoot the auger, fan, and ignitor:
    • Run the shutdown cycle.
    • Ensure the grill is completely cooled.
    • Unplug the grill.
  2. Remove the auger box panel:
    • With the auger box attached to the bottom of the grill, unscrew the 10 screws from the auger box (2 on each end, 3 along both sides).
