Error: 0001 | ER01 | High Temp Error

What's in This Article?

So you got a High Temp Error on your Traeger pellet grill — let's get it resolved and figure out what caused it so you're set up for success on future cooks.

What happens when this error occurs?

Depending on which grill you have, a High Temp Error may also show on your grill's controller as, Error: 0001 High Temp Error, or ER01. If the grill is paired with the Traeger app, it will also trigger a notification from the app.

Once this error occurs, your grill will start a special cool-down procedure to help prevent any further damage to the grill.

What causes these errors?

A WiFIRE-enabled Traeger grill will produce a High Temp Error when the grill detects temperatures above 550°F (290°C). Exceeding this temperature limit is often caused by one of the following:

  • Grease fire (most common)
  • Pellet fire
    • Usually caused by the firepot being installed incorrectly)
  • Old firmware, incorrect config version, incorrect Device Type
  • Strong wind blowing directly into the downdraft exhaust
  • Cooking at 500° while using the sear grate
  • Improper Startup
  • Cooking with a sear grate while the grill is set to 500°. The recommended temperature when using a sear grate is 475°.

What to Do

Safety Considerations: A high temp error usually means something unsafe is happening. Proceed with caution.

Steps

To clear your Traeger grill's High Temp Error, please take the steps below:

  1. Safety First! If there's an active fire, proceed with caution.
  2. Rescue any food while you still can.
  3. Turn off and unplug your grill.
  4. Clean out the firepot.
  5. Place 5-10 pellets back into the firepot.
  6. Plug and restart your grill.
    • D2 grills require a closed-lid startup, meaning you should preheat your grill with the lid shut. Failure to do so can result in temperature irregularities throughout your cook. Use the directions below to perform a closed-lid startup:
      1. Close your grill's lid.
      2. Turn on your gill.
      3. Set your desired temperature.
      4. Press Ignite.
  7. If you still see a High Temp Error after you've restarted your grill, please clear your notifications. Then on your controller, navigate to Menu > Settings > Clear Notifications.
  8. If the issue persists, please contact Customer Support.

Applicable Grills

Steps

  1. Safety First! If there's an active fire, proceed with caution.
  2. Rescue any food while you still can.
  3. Check your grill's firmware to make sure it's on the latest version.
  4. Allow the grill to finish its automatically initiated cool-down procedure.
  5. If there was strong wind when the fire occurred, the error should clear once restarted. Position the grill so the exhaust is facing toward a wall or at least so the wind is not blowing directly into the downdraft exhaust.
    • This error can trigger when winds stronger than 30 mph are blowing into the downdraft exhaust for longer than 10 minutes.
  6. Using the sear grate while cooking at 500° can cause a high temp error to occur. The recommended cook temperature when using the sear grate is 475°. If the grill temp is set to 500° while using the sear grate, the frequent lid opens that happen with searing may cause the grill temp to spike, resulting in a high temp error.
    • If this happens, adjust the grill temp to 475° when using the sear grate.
  7. Leaving the lid open for extended periods can lead to a drop in temperature, followed by an overshoot when the lid is closed as the system attempts to recover the lost heat.
  8. Inspect your grill for damage, specifically the thermocouple.
  9. Power cycle your grill.
    • The error should clear once you restart your grill.
  10. Run a SELF-TEST and Part Diagnosis to ensure all parts are communicating with the motherboard correctly and are not triggering any other errors.
    • On the controller display, go to MENU > MAINTENANCE & CARE > SELF-TEST.
  11. Clean the grill thoroughly before starting another cook.
  12. Feel free to contact Customer Support if you have additional questions.

    • Grill maintenance information for future cooks:
      • Before each cook:
        1. Remove buildup from the drip tray. Replace the liner if needed.
      • After each cook:
        1. Remove excess food from the grates while still warm.
        2. Scrape all grease into the EZ-Clean Grease & Ash keg.
      • Monthly:
        1. Remove grill grates, drip tray, and manifold.
        2. Vacuum ash from inside the firepot.
        3. Scrape creosote from the backsplash and back of the grill lid.
        4. Wipe down grill cavity with Traeger grill cleaner.
        5. Remove and clean out grease drain chute. Remove ash by sweeping it into EZ-Clean Grease & Ash Keg.
        6. Replace the EZ-Clean Grease & Ash Keg liner when full.
      • Do not overload the grill with too much food. Even if there is ample room in the grill, to be cautious of loading excessive amounts of food that can release large
quantities of grease (for example, more than a pound of bacon).
