Connecting a Traeger Grill to an Eero or Mesh WiFi Network

What's in This Article?

Mesh networks may complicate WiFIRE grill pairing because grills use 2.4 GHz WiFi. Check network settings, try a guest network or a mobile hotspot, and follow Eero-specific troubleshooting steps.

Applies to: All WiFIRE grills connecting to mesh network routers

What Is a Mesh Network?

A mesh network uses multiple WiFi access points throughout the home to improve WiFi coverage.

Mesh networks often use both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi under the same network name.

Eero and Orbi are common examples of mesh networks.

Because Traeger grills connect using 2.4 GHz WiFi, setup can sometimes be more difficult on mesh networks.

Having Trouble Connecting?

If you use an Eero, Orbi, or another mesh WiFi system, follow these steps in order.

Before You Start

Follow the standard troubleshooting for:

1. Toggle Airplane Mode

Applies to: Pro Series, Ironwood 650, Ironwood 885, Timberline 850 & 1300 (D2), Costco Grills. Skip this step for Touchscreen, Woodridge, and Westwood series grills.

  1. Put the phone in Airplane Mode and disable Bluetooth.
  2. Power cycle the grill.
  3. Attempt pairing again.

If the grill pairs: Success!

If the grill does not pair: Continue.

2. Check the Network

Check the following:

  • The router or mesh system is up to date.
  • The network password is correct.
  • The grill has a good WiFi signal.
  1. If all is correct, move to the next step.
If it is not correct, enter the correct information and attempt pairing again.

If the grill pairs: Success!

If the grill does not pair: Continue.

3. Use a Guest Network

If your router has a guest network option:

  1. Create a guest network.
  2. Connect the grill to the guest network.
  3. Power cycle the grill.
  4. Attempt pairing again.

If the grill pairs: Success!

If the grill does not pair: Continue.

4. Test with a Mobile Hotspot

Use a hotspot from a different phone.

  1. Turn on the hotspot.
  2. Power cycle the grill.
  3. Attempt pairing again.

If the grill pairs: Success! The issue may be related to your home network settings. Contact your ISP/Router support for a router diagnosis.
For Eero users, we have some tips below.

If pairing does not pair:
Contact Traeger Support and provide:

  • Your grill model
  • Your router type (Eero, Orbi, etc.)
  • Whether the grill connected to a hotspot
  • Any error messages you received while pairing

Still Not Connected?

Contact Eero Support for additional help with router settings. Per eero’s support page for 2.4 GHz devices, call eero Support at 1-877-659-2347 (U.S. and Canada) for help enabling Legacy Mode, which disables Wi-Fi 6 on the 2.4 GHz network.

  1. Before contacting Eero, clear all WiFi information from the grill.
    1. Under Menu > WiFi Information, the grill should only display:
      Name: Traeger - XXXX
      Password: Wifire - XXXX
      UUID: #
      MAC: #
    2. You should have the following information ready:
Grill name (which may appear as Express.if)
      Router serial number
      Router email address
