What to do if your grill's touchscreen controller display is frozen/not responding.
Symptoms
The grill's controller display turns on when powering on the grill, but does not respond to any touch commands.
Additional symptoms may vary depending on which firmware your grill has:
-
Any Firmware Version
- Unresponsive Display on Downloading Updates Screen
- Unresponsive Display when Pressing Buttons
-
Firmware Version: 01.02.13 & Newer
- The grill's display is on and stuck on one screen (often the Language Selection screen)
- The display will not respond to touch or dial commands, nor will it move to any other screen.
- Turning the grill off and on — and even disconnecting and reconnecting wires — returns the user back to the frozen screen.
-
Firmware Version: 01.03.12
- The display spins and eventually gets frozen and stuck on the 'Ready to Cook' screen.
- The controller display is unresponsive to touchscreen and button impressions.
-
Firmware Version 01.02.12 & Older
- The grill's display is on and stuck on one screen, but it will not respond to touch or dial commands, nor will it move to any other screen.
- Turning the grill off and on — and even disconnecting and reconnecting wires — returns the user back to the frozen screen.
Common Causes
Depending on your grill's firmware version, a frozen controller display is usually caused by one of the following factors:
- Firmware is on an old version
- The grill only partially updated
- The grill's nickname, created during pairing, has too many or invalid characters
How to Fix
As you go through the following troubleshooting steps, please do not delete the Traeger app from your phone. Keeping the app installed may provide additional insights to Traeger's mobile development teams should you need to contact Traeger Support.
1. Power Cycle
Many grill display issues can be resolved by power cycling the grill. We recommend power cycling your grill twice.
- Turn off and unplug your grill.
- Flip the power switch/press the power button to the on position.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Flip the power switch/press the power button to the off position.
- Plug in and turn on the grill.
2. Check Firmware
-
Find Your Grill's Firmware Version and compare to the latest version.
- Since your screen is unresponsive, find your firmware in the Traeger app.
- If on an old version, make sure the grill is connected to WiFi to allow it to update to the latest firmware version.
3. Proceed Based on Firmware Version
Next steps will depend on which firmware version your grill has installed:
- Firmware Version: 01.03.13 & Newer
- Firmware Version: 01.02.12
- Firmware Version 01.02.12 & Older
Firmware Version: 01.02.13 & Newer
If your grill's software version is 01.02.13, your display is likely stuck on the Language Selection screen.
- Keep your grill connected to WiFi and the Traeger app installed on your phone.
- Contact Customer Support so we can attempt to send a manual firmware update.
Firmware Version: 01.03.12
- Keep your grill connected to WiFi and the Traeger app installed on your phone.
- Contact Customer Support so we can attempt to send a manual firmware update.
Firmware Version 01.02.12 & Older
If your grill's software version is 01.02.12 or older, the issue is a result of a grill's name having more than 32 characters. We have resolved this in firmware version 01.02.13.
Because this was resolved in a new firmware version, power cycling your grill one or two times should prompt the grill to resolve the issue on its own.
