WiFIRE Grill Running Too Hot

What's in This Article?

Traeger grills cook on an average, meaning that there may be slight fluctuation higher or lower than the set temperature, leading to a correct average temperature throughout the cook. However, if you feel that your grill is consistently running too hot, let's run through some common troubleshooting to have your grill meet expectations.

If you're seeing a High Temp Error (HEr) or experienced a grill fire, please review those articles first.

Grill Running Hotter Than Expected?

It's normal for your Traeger to fluctuate above and below the set temperature during a cook. Your grill is designed to maintain an average temperature over time, so occasional swings are expected.

If your grill seems to be consistently cooking hotter than expected, the tips below can help identify some common causes and get your cook back on track

Common Reasons Your Grill May Be Running Hot

If your Traeger grill is running hotter than the temperature you set, one or more of the issues below may be the cause.

Comparing with An External Thermometer?

If you're using a An External Thermometer, it's normal to see temperature differences.

Traeger grills and aftermarket thermometers measure temperature differently and aren't calibrated the same way. This can make it appear that the grill is running too hot, even when it's operating normally.

Check for Damaged Internal Parts

Severely damaged internal parts can cause excess heat.

Inspect the:

  • Heat Baffle
  • Drip Tray

If either part is severely rusted, cracked, or burned through, it may affect grill performance. Normal discoloration and minor warping are expected and do not impact cooking results.

Weather and Grill Placement Matter

Outdoor conditions can have a bigger impact than many people realize, check Weather Effects on Grilling article.

Your grill may run warmer when:

  • Outdoor temperatures are high
  • The grill is in direct sunlight
  • The grill has been sitting in the sun for extended periods

For low-and-slow cooks during hot weather, try cooking earlier in the morning or later in the evening.

Confirm Proper Startup and Shutdown

Following the correct startup and shutdown procedures helps your grill regulate temperature properly.

Starting or shutting down the grill incorrectly can lead to unexpected temperature behavior. Be sure to follow the instructions for your specific Traeger model.

Using Super Smoke?

Super Smoke is designed to create more smoke flavor, and temperature swings are part of normal operation while it's enabled.

You may notice temperatures temporarily climbing above your set temperature when using this feature. For best results, turn on Super Smoke after the grill has completed preheating

Opening the Lid Frequently

Every time the lid is opened, heat escapes from the cooking chamber.

To recover, the grill may temporarily produce more heat, which can result in higher temperature readings afterward.

Remember: "If you're lookin', you ain't cooking'."

Check the Chimney Cap Height (If Equipped)

If your grill has a chimney, excessive airflow can cause the fire to burn hotter.

Make sure the gap between the chimney cap and chimney is approximately ¾ inch (2 cm), or about the width of your thumb.

Using an Insulation Blanket? (Pro 575 & 780 Only)

Insulation blankets are optional.

For Pro 575 and Pro 780 models, insulation blankets should only be used when:

  • Temperatures are below freezing
  • Cooking at 350°F (175°C) or below

If your grill is running hot, remove the blanket and monitor temperatures during your next cook. If overheating continues, contact Customer Support

Check for Software Updates

Keeping your grill's firmware and the Traeger App up to date helps ensure accurate temperature management and reliable performance.

See How to Update Traeger Firmware.

Inspect the Temperature Sensor

Your grill's temperature sensor (Thermocouple/RTD) monitors cooking temperatures and communicates with the controller. If it's damaged, bent, or touching other components, temperature readings may be affected.

For new grills, verify that the orange protective cover was removed before the first cook

If you suspect damage or need help, please contact Customer Support.
