Traeger grills cook on an average, meaning that there may be slight fluctuation higher or lower than the set temperature, leading to a correct average temperature throughout the cook. However, if you feel that your grill is consistently running too hot, let's run through some common troubleshooting to have your grill meet expectations.
If this is a one-off experience due to a grill fire or getting a HEr error message, please review the following articles for further guidance:
Grill Running Too Hot: Common Causes
If your Traeger grill is running hotter than the temperature you set, one or more of the issues below may be the cause.
Using a Third‑Party Thermometer
Many customers compare the grill’s temperature to a third‑party thermometer and notice a difference.
- Third‑party thermometers measure temperature differently
- They are not calibrated the same way as your Traeger
- This can make it seem like the grill is overheating when it isn’t
For more details, see Third‑Party Thermometers for why they’re not a reliable comparison.
Damaged or Incorrectly Installed Parts
Severely damaged internal parts can cause excess heat.
Check for:
- Burnt‑through or rusted heat baffle
- Burnt‑through or rusted drip tray
Normal discoloration or minor warping does not affect performance.
Grill Location & Weather
Warm weather and placement matter.
- Hot outdoor temperatures can cause higher grill temps
- Direct sunlight makes the grill absorb more heat
- Dark metal grills heat up faster in the sun
Tip: For long, low‑and‑slow cooks, try grilling early in the morning or later in the evening.
Incorrect Startup or Shutdown
Each Traeger model has a specific startup and shutdown process.
- Starting the grill with the lid open or closed incorrectly can cause temp issues
- Shutting down improperly can lead to future problems
Review How to Start Your Grill to confirm the correct steps for your model.
Super Smoke Mode
Super Smoke is designed to create temperature swings.
- Temps may rise above the set temperature
- Fluctuations can exceed the normal ±25°F / ±14°C range
Pro Tip: Always turn on Super Smoke after the grill has finished preheating.
Opening the Lid Too Often
Opening the lid frequently causes temp changes.
- Heat escapes quickly
- The grill may overcompensate and run hotter
Remember: “If you’re lookin’, you ain’t cookin’.”
Chimney Cap Height (If Equipped)
If your grill has a chimney:
- The gap between the chimney and cap should be about ¾ inch (2 cm) or the width of your thumb
- Too much airflow can make the fire burn too hot
Adjust the cap if needed.
Insulation Blanket Use (Pro 575 & 780 Only)
Insulation blankets are optional.
Use them only when:
- Outdoor temps are below freezing
- Grill temps are 350°F (175°C) or lower
If the grill runs too hot:
- Remove the blanket
- If overheating continues, contact Customer Support
Outdated Firmware or App
Old software can cause temperature inaccuracies.
- Make sure your grill firmware is up to date
- Update the Traeger App on your phone
See How to Update Traeger Firmware or visit the Traeger Status page for current versions.
Damaged Thermocouple (Rare)
The Thermocouple/RTD measures grill temperature and sends data to the controller.
Check that:
- It is not bent
- It is not touching other parts
New grill? Make sure the orange protective cover was removed before your first cook.
