Why Is My WiFIRE Grill Running Too Cool?

What's in This Article?

If your grill isn't reaching the temperature you set, is taking longer than expected to heat up, or the flame went out during a cook, don't worry. In most cases, the cause is something simple, like pellet quality, weather conditions, or grill maintenance. This guide walks through the most common causes and how to get your grill back to performing its best

A grill's temperature dipping below the set temp is normal — Traeger grills are designed to recover and maintain cooking temperatures over time rather than hold a perfectly constant reading.

You can expect to see this:

  • During startup
  • In cold or windy weather
  • After opening the lid
  • After adding large amounts of food

Check these best-practice resources for more tips and tricks to getting amazing results from your Traeger grill.

Common Causes

If your grill is running below set temp consistently, it's most likely caused by:

  • Using low-quality pellets
  • Ash and sawdust buildup
  • Poor air circulation
  • Adding frozen or cold food
  • Starting or shutting down your grill incorrectly
  • Cold & windy weather

Very rarely, it may also be caused by outdated firmware or component failure.

What can I do?

Expand the sections below to start figuring out what's causing your grill to run below the temperature you set it to:

Check Pellet Quality (Most Common Cause)

Pellet quality is the most common reason a grill struggles to maintain temperature. Old, damp, or poor-quality pellets can produce less heat and may even cause the flame to go out. Before troubleshooting anything else:

  • Empty the hopper and auger of existing pellets
  • Vacuum out any pellet dust or sawdust
  • Refill with fresh, dry pellets

Healthy pellets should have a slight shine and snap cleanly when broken. Store pellets in an airtight container to protect them from moisture.

Check How You Keep Your Grill Clean

Ash buildup and grease accumulation can impact airflow and overall performance.

Routine cleaning helps your grill heat efficiently and maintain consistent temperatures

Follow our maintenance instructions to make sure you're keeping your grill in optimal condition.

Check Airflow

Your Traeger relies on airflow to circulate heat throughout the grill.

Make sure:

  • Food isn't pressed against the sides of the grill.
  • Foil or drip tray liners aren't blocking airflow.
  • The grill interior is free of excessive debris
Are you cooking Cold or Frozen Food?

Adding large quantities of cold or frozen food can temporarily lower the grill's temperature.

This is normal and the grill should recover once it has time to generate additional heat. For best results, allow the grill to fully preheat before adding food.

Follow Correct Startup & Shutdown Process

For the best performance, allow the grill to complete its startup cycle and fully preheat before adding food. Adding food too early or using an incorrect startup process can make it harder for the grill to reach and maintain temperature.

Incorrect Shutdown Cycle

Just like a computer, your grill needs to finish its shutdown process properly.

Skipping the shutdown cycle can affect future cooks and contribute to temperature-related issues.

Are You Cooking at Cold & Windy Weather?

Cold temperatures and strong winds can pull heat away from the grill, making it harder to maintain higher temperatures. Check Weather Effects on Grilling for more information.

If you're cooking in colder conditions, longer preheat times and larger temperature fluctuations can be expected.

Check For The Latest Firmware

Keeping your grill updated helps ensure it performs as intended.

  1. Open Menu > About Grill
  2. Note your firmware version
  3. Compare it to the latest version available
  4. Update if needed, check out Firmware Updates.

For a Westwood series grill, the firmware version is visible only on the Traeger app.

Could It Be a Part Issue?

While component failures can happen, they are one of the least common causes of a grill running too cool.
