Westwood Series Grill not Igniting

What's in This Article?

Important: Ensure the protective film has been removed from the controller display prior to use. Failure to remove the film can affect the controller's responsiveness to button presses as well as cause "phantom" button presses.

Symptoms of a Grill not Igniting

Your grill not igniting could mean a couple of things:

  • The grill is not getting power.
  • The controller is not turning on.
  • Incorrect ignition sequence.
  • The pellets are not igniting, or the grill is not getting hot.

What to Do

Before you start: Prepare the grill

Safety first! Make sure the grill is cool before removing components.
  • Confirm there are pellets in the hopper. Add pellets if needed.

  • Remove the grates, drip tray, and heat baffle

Step 1. Check for Pellets in the Auger/Firepot & Hopper

Is this the first time using the grill? Many first-time users forget to prime their auger before seasoning their grill.

Look for pellets in the firepot and at the end of the auger tube.

Observation Next Steps
No pellets in firepot or at end of auger tube

Prime the auger, confirm pellets have reached the firepot, and try igniting again.

If the grill still won't ignite, move to Step 2.

Excessive pellets
Pellet Pucks
Sawdust & Ash

Clear the firepot, clean the grill if needed, ensure the auger is primed, and try igniting again.

If the grill still won't ignite, move to Step 2.

Step 2. Check Components

  1. With the lid open, ignite the grill.
  2. While igniting, check to see if the following components are working as expected. Expected behavior should result in a successful ignition.
Component How to Check
Auger- will turn intermittently and the auger motor fan will spin quickly

Look at the auger from the end of the auger tube to confirm the auger is turning.

Remove the hopper access panel and confirm the white auger motor fan spins quickly

Induction Fan- will turn on and off to cycle airflow through the grill

Listen—the fan will produce a whirring sound

Hover your hand over the firepot. You should feel airflow coming from the fan.

Ignitor- will heat up and possibly glow

Look for the glow of the ignitor

Hover your hand over the firepot. You should feel heat radiating from it.

  1. If components behave abnormally, expand "Resolution" below to diagnose the applicable component.

Resolution

Follow the resolution steps below to address the following abnormal behaviors:

  • Auger motor fan spinning slowly
  • Auger not turning or auger motor fan not spinning at all
  • Induction fan not running
  • Ignitor not heating up/glowing

Auger Motor Fan Spinning Slowly

This is a known issue. A small percentage of Westwood Series grills may experience a slow-moving auger.

Resolution: Contact Traeger Support

Auger Not Turning / Auger Motor Fan Not Spinning

Follow these directions if the auger doesn't turn AND the auger motor fan spins normally or not at all.

  1. Tap the fan to see if it starts spinning. If not, power off and unplug the grill. Remove the hopper access panel (if not already removed)
  2. Check the auger motor connection to the controller.
Unplug and plug it back in to the controller.

  3. Plug in, power on, and ignite the grill.
  4. If auger still does not turn, contact Traeger Support

Induction Fan Not Running

  1. Power off and unplug the grill. Remove the hopper access panel (if not already removed)
  2. Check the fan connection to the controller.
Unplug and plug it back in to the controller.

  3. Plug in, power on, and ignite the grill. Check if the fan is running. Listen for the fan and check for a light breeze.
  4. If the fan still is not running, lightly flick the fan blades with your fingers to see if it will start to turn.
  5. If the fan still does not run, contact Traeger Support.

Ignitor Not Heating/Glowing

  1. Power off and unplug the grill. Remove the hopper access panel (if not already removed)
  2. Check the ignitor connection to the controller.
Unplug and plug it back in to the controller.

  3. Plug the grill back in and look for the glow of the ignitor. Feel for hot air coming from the ignitor tube in the firepot.
  4. If the ignitor still is not working, contact Traeger Support
