What does ---F & ---C mean?
"---F" (or "---C" if your grill is configured for Celsius instead of Fahrenheit) is the default screen that indicates your grill is powered on and ready for use.
The three dashes, "---" indicate an unset temp, and the "F" or "C" indicate the temperature scale (Fahrenheit or Celsius) the controller is configured to display.
- Throughout the rest of this article, we will use,"---F", when referring to both "---F" and "---C".
Why does my controller say ---F?
A Woodridge Series controller will display "---F" when the grill is powered on but not in use.
When the controller reverts back to "---F" after igniting the grill, it's usually because the ignite button wasn't pressed within 5 seconds of setting the grill's temperature.
- Pressing the controller knob only confirms the set temperature. You must press the ignite button after setting the temperature to ignite the grill.
What to do if your controller reverts back to ---F after igniting
A controller displaying "---F" is simply an indication that the grill is powered on and ready to ignite. When the controller reverts back to "---F" after igniting, it means the grill wasn't ignited correctly.
1. Make sure you're igniting your grill correctly
See also, How to Start a Woodridge Series Grill, for additional startup and ignition tips.
-
Tap any button to wake the grill. The controller will display "---F" (or "---C" if the controller is configured for Celsius).
-
Turn the dial to set the grill's temperature, and press the dial to confirm.
- Once the temp is confirmed, the ignite button should start blinking orange.
-
Within 5 seconds of setting the temp, press the ignite button.
- If successful, the ignite button should stop blinking, and you should hear the grill start to ignite: the fan should start running and pellets should start falling into the firepot.
If the controller continues to revert back to "---F", proceed to the next step.
2. Power Cycle and Check Common Symptoms
- Power cycle the grill and try igniting again.
-
Did you press the dial to confirm the set temp?
- After turning the dial to the desired temperature, you need to press the dial to confirm the selection.
-
Did you press the ignite button?
- Not pressing the ignite button is the MOST COMMON reason the controller reverts back to the "---F" screen. Start over and make sure you press the ignite button within 5 seconds of setting the grill's temperature.
-
Is there dirt, dust, or debris on the ignite button?
- Dirt, dust, and debris can prevent the button's sensors from recognizing touch. Clean off the ignite button and try again.
-
Did you press the ignite button WITHIN 5 SECONDS of confirming the set temp?
- The ignite button will time out after 5 seconds. Clean off any dust or debris from the ignite button and start over, making sure you press ignite within the 5-second window.
-
Did the controller emit 2 quick beeps?
- The controller produces 2 quick beeps when the ignition sequence times out, meaning the ignite button wasn't pressed within the 5-second window. Clean off any dust or debris from the ignite button and start over, making sure you press ignite within the 5-second window.
-
Is the orange light on the ignite button still blinking orange after pressing it?
- If the ignite button light is still blinking, the ignite button didn't register it was pressed. Clean off any dust or debris from the ignite button and start over, making sure you press ignite a little harder and longer within the 5-second window.
- If the grill still doesn't ignite and continues to revert back to "---F", contact Traeger Support.
