Note: Meat probes and/or thermometers are not to be used to check the internal temperature of the grills barrel. See Third-Party Thermometers.
Probe Placement
The probe being inserted incorrectly can lead to probe errors, the probe reading incorrectly or not at all.

The grill will beep, letting you know that the probe has been inserted.
- The grill may still beep when the probe is not inserted all the way. Double check that the probe is pushed in all the way if you are still getting the error.
How to Determine if a Probe Is Reading Correctly
A properly working meat probes should read within ±7.5°F | ±4/2°C of the actual temperature.
Pro Tip: Comparing your probe to a third-party thermometer is not a reliable test.
Ice Bath Test
To determine if a probe is reading temperature correctly, create an ice bath as a baseline. Because water freezes at 32°F | 0°C; creating an ice bath simulates an environment that is nearly exactly 32°F.
- Fill a glass with crushed or pellet ice (avoid large cubes).
- Add water until it’s about ½ inch from the top.
- Make sure the ice rests at the bottom (not floating).
- Insert the probe and stir gently for 1 minute.
Expected reading:
Between 24.5°F–39.5°F (–4.2°C–4.2°C)
- If outside this range:
- WiFIRE grill? Calibrate the probe (see below).
- Non-connected grill? Customer Support.
Probe Damage
If the probe breaks, contact Customer Support for a replacement.
If the jack breaks off inside the controller:
- Use a jack removal tool to extract it.
- Then, contact Support for a new probe.

Controller Not Showing Probe Temp?
- Pro/Digital Controllers: No way to test if the issue is the probe or controller. Contact Support.
-
ARC Controllers:
- Plug in the probe while the grill is on.
- Press the center/select button twice.
- Use ▲/▼ to set a probe alarm (e.g., 140°F).
- Press center/select to confirm.
- This will illuminate the probe icon on display, showing the current probe temperature until the controller is used again.
If the probe alarm still does not display, contact Customer Support.

If you've received one of the following errors, select the error for step by step help.
Calibrate Probe
A properly working Traeger meat probe will read within 7.5°F of the actual temperature.
- Create an ice bath, see Ice Bath Test for Meat Probes.
- Go to:
MENU > SETTINGS > PROBE CALIBRATION - Select CALIBRATE PROBE.
- Stir the probe in the ice bath for 1 minute.
- If reading is off by more than 15°F (9°C) contact our Customer Support team.
- If within range → Use PROBE OFFSET to adjust.
Using Probe Offset
- Go to:
MENU > SETTINGS > PROBE CALIBRATION > PROBE OFFSET - Adjust dial in 1° increments from -15° to +15°F/-8° to +8°C.
-
Press the dial to confirm.
Grill Powers off when Plugging in or Unplugging Meat Probe
This is a safety feature triggered by static electricity.
Fix:
Touch the grill frame to ground yourself before picking up the meat probe and plugging it in.
See, Pellet Grill Shuts down when Unplugging Meat Probe for more information.
Probe Reading in Wrong Units (°C/°F)
Change the grill's temperature unit to the opposite, then switch it back. This resets the probe’s unit.
Probe Not Showing on Controller
- Make sure the probe is fully flush with the port.
- Clean the port with compressed air or a Q-tip + rubbing alcohol. Clean the Probe Port.
- Make sure the probe is fully inserted.
