Westwood Series Controller Displays LO or bAS

What's in This Article?

What to do if your Westwood or Westwood XL grill displays LO or bAS.

Note: LO will be displayed on US grills; bAS will be displayed on Canadian grills. This is determined by the temperature unit set on the grill.

  • Fahrenheit=LO
  • Celsius=bAS

What does LO (bAS on Canadian grills) mean?

When Lo is displayed on a Westwood series controller, it indicates that there has been a 25% drop in temperature from the set temp.

If the grill is connected to the Traeger app, the following will display on the app:

What causes LO/bAS to be displayed?

The most common causes for this alert are:

  • The grill's lid has been open for an extended period of time (longer than 2 minutes) or is being opened often.
  • The grill has run out of pellets.

Other factors that can trigger this alert are:

  • Grill components not functioning correctly.

What to do if LO/bAS is displayed

1. Close the lid

  • If the lid has been open for longer than 2 minutes or has been opened frequently, close the lid and allow the grill to recover.
    • After 1 minute of the lid being closed, the grill controller will beep, and the temperature will go back to the set temp.

2. Add Pellets to the hopper

3. Check components

  • If neither of the above factors triggered this alert (grill has pellets and lid has not been open for 2 minutes or more), continue troubleshooting.
  1. Prepare the grill to trouble shoot the auger, fan, and ignitor:
    • Run the shutdown cycle.
    • Ensure the grill is completely cooled.
  2. Check the components:
    1. Check to see if the following components are working:
      • Auger (it will turn intermittently, not constantly)
        1. Check to see if the auger is spinning
      • Fan (it will turn intermittently)
        1. Hover hand over the firepot and see if there is heat
        2. Listen for the fan running
        3. Check for a light breeze from the fan

4. Continue diagnosing

  • If either of the component are not working correctly, continue diagnosing the issue.
  1. Remove the Hopper Service Panel:
    • Remove the x6 screws from the hopper service panel on the side of the hopper in the following order:
    • Remove x2 screws on the back of the panel by the vents first.

    • Remove x2 screws on the bottom of the panel second.

    • Remove panel.
  2. Auger not Spinning

    1. Power off and unplug the grill.
    2. Check the connection from the auger motor to the controller. Unplug and plug it back in to the controller.

    3. Plug the grill in and see if the auger is spinning.
    4. If auger still does not spin, contact customer service.
  3. Fan Not Running

    1. Power off and unplug the grill.
    2. Check the fan connection to the controller. Unplug and plug it back in to the controller.

    3. Plug the grill in and see if the fan is running. Listen for the fan and check for a light breeze.
      1. If the fan still does not run, lightly tap on the motor laminations with a plastic screwdriver handle:

      2. If the fan still is not running, lightly flick the fan blades with your fingers to see if it will start to turn.
      3. If the fan still does not run, contact customer service.
