My Touchscreen Grill Isn't Reaching the Set Temperature

What's in This Article?

What to do if your Touchscreen grill does not get to set temp or is consistently running below temp.

Is your grill taking longer than expected to heat up or struggling to reach the temperature you selected? This article covers the most common causes and steps you can take to improve temperature performance on your touchscreen grill.

Completing a successful seasoning process prior to any cook is crucial to the grill's ability to function at its optimal state. The grill's ability to get to temp more quickly will improve over time.

Touchscreen grills are larger than many other Traeger models and may take longer to preheat, especially during the first few cooks. This is normal and should improve over time.

Why Isn't My Grill Reaching Temperature?

Several factors can affect your grill's ability to heat up and maintain temperature. The most common causes include:
  • Check for Software Updates
  • Pellets
  • Initial Burn-In Time
  • Correct start up & shutdown
  • Cold or windy weather
  • Poor grill maintenance
  • Poor air circulation in the grill
  • Cooking frozen or cold food
  • Part failure (rare)
Check Your Pellets First

Pellet quality is the most common cause of temperature issues.

Make sure:

  • Pellets are dry and free of excess sawdust
  • Pellets snap cleanly when broken
  • Pellets have been stored in a sealed, dry container
  • The hopper is not running out of pellets for the cook

If you're unsure about pellet quality, replace the pellets and vacuum any sawdust from the hopper and auger area before starting a new cook

Make Sure the Grill Was Started Correctly

An improper startup can affect grill performance throughout the cook.

Before adding food, always allow the grill to complete its startup process and fully preheat

Cooking in Cold or Windy Weather?

Cold temperatures and wind can make it harder for your grill to reach and maintain higher temperatures.

To help:

  • Position the grill out of strong winds
  • Keep the lid closed when possible
  • Consider using an insulation blanket when cooking in freezing conditions(32°F/0°C or below).
Clean Your Grill

Ash buildup, grease, and excess sawdust can affect airflow and temperature performance.

Play close attention to the Sawdust build up inside the barrel and ash inside the Firepot.

Regular cleaning helps your grill perform at its best. Follow our maintenance instructions to make sure you're keeping your grill in optimal condition.

Check Airflow Inside the Grill

Your grill relies on proper airflow to distribute heat evenly.

Make sure:

  • Food isn't touching the sides of the grill
  • Internal components are installed correctly
  • Nothing is blocking airflow inside the cooking chamber.
  • Drip tray liners or aluminum foil should sit fully inside the drip tray and Not hang over the sides or block airflow.
Check for Cold or Frozen Food

Adding very cold or frozen food close or next to the Thermocouple can temporarily lower the grill temperature and increase recovery time.

For best results, wait until the grill is fully preheated before placing food inside.

Was the Previous Cook Shut Down Properly?

Just like a computer, a grill may experience issues if it wasn't shut down correctly after the previous cook.

Always use the complete shutdown cycle before powering off the grill.

Verify Initial Seasoning Time

This process only applies to New grills, if you don't have a new grill move to next step.

The Initial Seasoning process sets the grill to 450°F/204°C. The time the grills take to get to temperature this first time can take up to an hour.

Seasoning your grill is a crucial step to complete prior to cooking any food on the grill in order to ensure the best flavor, optimal performance, and proper and safe grill operation. The seasoning process primes the auger with pellets and utilizes high heat to burn off any remaining manufacturing oils.

Check for Software Updates

Make sure your grill is running the latest firmware. Keeping your grill up to date can improve overall performance and temperature management.

Inspect for Possible Component Failure

While part failure does occur occasionally, it is the rarest culprit of a grill not getting hot enough. Traeger grill parts typically fail in a binary manner--they either work, or they don't.

1.Check the Firepot

An improperly installed firepot can affect temperature performance.

Verify that:

  • The firepot is seated correctly.
  • The firepot is not caught on the auger tube.
  • Any packaging material has been removed from underneath the firepot.firepot-correct_installation.jpeg

2.Verify the Temperature Sensor (Thermocouple)

The thermocouple measures the grill's internal temperature and helps the controller regulate heat.

Before checking the thermocouple:

  • Turn the grill off.
  • Allow the grill to cool completely.

Then:

  • Compare the temperature displayed on the controller to the outdoor temperature.
  • A properly functioning thermocouple should read within approximately 20°F (10°C) of the surrounding air temperature.

If the grill is in direct sunlight or has been stored in a very hot or cold location, the temperature reading may not accurately reflect outdoor conditions.

Small variations are normal. Contact Customer Support if the displayed temperature repeatedly remains more than 20°F (10°C) above or below the surrounding air temperature during multiple checks. A one-time or occasional deviation does not typically indicate a faulty component.

3.Check the Induction Fan

The induction fan supplies air to the fire. If it isn't working properly, your grill may have trouble reaching or maintaining temperature.

To check the fan:

  1. Remove the grill grate, drip tray, and heat baffle.
  2. Start the grill.
  3. Carefully hold your hand above the firepot without touching any hot surfaces.
  4. As the grill ignites, you should feel a gentle flow of air coming from the firepot.

If you feel airflow:
✅ The fan is working correctly.

If you do not feel airflow:

  1. Locate the induction fan underneath the hopper.Touchscreen fan location.gif
  2. Use a flashlight if needed.
  3. Check whether the fan is spinning.

If the fan is not spinning:

  1. Turn off and unplug the grill.
  2. Remove the fan housing.
  3. Gently spin the fan blades by hand to help clear any dirt or debris.
  4. Restart the grill and check the fan again.

Check the Fan Wiring

If the fan still isn't spinning:

  1. Turn off and unplug the grill.
  2. Remove the hopper side panel.
  1. Verify the fan wire is securely connected to the motherboard.
  2. Reconnect the wire if needed and restart the grill.

If the fan still does not operate, please contact Customer Support for additional assistance.
