Pellets Overflowing in Westwood Grills

What's in This Article?

The article addresses the issue of pellets overflowing in the firepot of Westwood Series grills, causing ignition failure and an ER07 error. Symptoms include pellets overflowing, some burning or smoldering, and ignition failure. Causes are typically related to induction fan or controller issues, with slow fan movement common in new grills. Resolution involves powering off, cleaning the firepot, checking fan connections, manually spinning the fan, and testing operation, with Traeger Support contact recommended if problems persist.

What You're Seeing & Why It Happens

  • Pellets are piled up or overflowing the firepot: During startup, the auger feeds pellets into the firepot while the ignitor heats up. If the induction fan isn't spinning or is moving slowly, it can't sustain the flame, and unburned pellets accumulate.

  • An Er07 (Failed To Ignite) error appears on the controller and in the app: This error signals that ignition didn't complete. If the grill wasn't paired to WiFi or you weren't nearby, you may not have seen this error.

How to Get Your Grill Working Again

Safety First! Before You Start Troubleshooting:

  • Make sure the grill has fully completed its shutdown cycle and has cooled down—pellets in the firepot may still be smoldering.
  • Power off and unplug the grill.
  1. Remove the grill grates, drip tray, and heat baffle. Then clean out the firepot, removing all the overflowing pellets.
  2. Remove the hopper access panel on the right side of the hopper.
  3. Find the induction fan and spin the fan blades with your fingers. It should rotate easily.

  4. On the back of the controller, disconnect and reconnect the fan connection (purple wires), making sure it's fully seated on the controller.

  5. Reinstall your heat baffle, drip tray, and grill grates. Keep the hopper panel removed. Then, plug in and power on the grill
  6. Ignite your grill and verify the induction fan is spinning.
The fan should spin fast and will turn on and off intermittently.
  • Fan's working as expected: Success! Let your grill finish igniting to confirm it gets to temp.
