Lid Burps on Pellet Grills

What's in This Article?

Learn what causes an audible pop (lid burp), how to respond safely, and tips to prevent it.

What Are Lid Burps?

Lid burps are an audible pop or “burp” caused by pressure building inside a pellet grill when vapors or gas have nowhere to escape. The sound can be loud and unexpected, and some may describe it as an explosion. In rare cases, the lid can pop open, which may be startling.

How Lid Burps Relate to Grill Fires:
The underlying conditions for both are similar: an overfilled or compromised firepot with pellets mixed with ash/sawdust. If ignition finally occurs, a larger mass of fuel can ignite at once (over-fire), creating pressure that may cause a lid burp.

Symptoms

  • Loud pop/burp sound during startup or operation
  • Lid pops open momentarily as pressure releases

Causes

Lid burps are uncommon and typically happen after an improper shutdown—especially when a flameout or  LEr - Low Temp Error occurred previously.

What to Do If a Lid Burp Occurs

Quick Reference

Issue Cause Fix
Lid Burp Improper shutdown; pellet buildup with ash/sawdust; delayed ignition Clean firepot; empty hopper; vacuum auger; load fresh pellets; run Shutdown Cycle
  1. Step back. Do not open the lid immediately.
  2. Wait 2–3 minutes for pressure to dissipate.
  3. If flames are excessive, turn the grill off safely and allow it to cool.
  4. After cooling:
    • Disconnect power for safety.
    • Empty the hopper and vacuum sawdust from the hopper bottom and auger tube.
    • Clean the firepot thoroughly.
    • Reload with fresh, dry pellets from a sealed bag.
  5. Restart correctly and always run the Shutdown Cycle after every cook.
Prevention Tips
  • ✔ Always run the Shutdown Cycle after every cook.
  • Check and clean the firepot before ignition.
  • Empty the hopper and vacuum the auger tube after flameout or LEr.
  • ✔ Use fresh, dry pellets stored in sealed containers.
  • ✔ Avoid repeated start attempts without cleaning when ignition fails.
Before Next Cook – Checklist
  • ✔ Shutdown Cycle complete
  • ✔ Firepot clean
  • ✔ Hopper emptied; auger tube vacuumed
  • ✔ Fresh, dry pellets loaded
  • ✔ Airflow unobstructed
  • ✔ Normal ignition and temperature ramp observed
FAQs

Is a lid burp dangerous?

It can be startling and may pop the lid open due to pressure. Keep clear of the lid seam during startup and follow the safety and cleaning steps outlined above.

Why did my grill burp after an LEr or flameout?

An LEr (Low Temp Error) or flameout leaves unburned pellets and ash in the firepot. On restart, fresh pellets may fail to ignite, leading to gas and fuel buildup. When ignition finally occurs, the accumulated fuel can ignite at once, creating a pressure surge that burps the lid.

Do I need to replace parts after a lid burp?

Not necessarily. Start with a thorough cleaning of the firepot, burn grate, hot rod area, hopper, and auger tube. If ignition issues persist, contact Customer Support to inspect the hot rod, airflow, and control settings.

How do I know if my pellets are the problem?

Pellets that are crumbly, swollen, or excessively dusty may be moisture-compromised and harder to ignite. Use fresh, dry pellets from a sealed bag and periodically vacuum the hopper/auger.

What is the correct shutdown process?

Run the grill’s Shutdown Cycle after every cook. This ensures residual fuel is cleared, temperatures stabilize, and the system cools properly, educing leftover pellets and ash in the firepot.
