Flat Top Grill not Turning On

What's in This Article?

So your new Flatrock flat top grill isn't turning on -- let's figure out why and get you back griddling.

Symptoms

  • Power Switch not lighting up when plugged in and in the on (I) position
  • None of the controller UI board functions work/light up: flame sensor, fuel sensor & ignitor

Possible Causes

  • Power cable not plugged into a working outlet
  • Power cable not fully plugged into power panel
  • Power switch not set to on position
  • Power panel,  transformer or control UI board wired incorrectly
  • Part failure

What to Do if Your Flat Top Grill Won't Turn On

TOOLS NEEDED:

Phillips Screwdriver
9V Battery

1. Check if the grill is getting power from the outlet.

If the power switch lights up when flipped to the on position, the grill is getting power and the power cord and power panel are working correctly.

  1. Ensure that the griddle is plugged into a wall outlet and that there is power at that outlet. If plugged into a GFI outlet, make sure it didn't trip.
  2. Verify that the power cable is inserted and fully seated in the griddle power panel.
  3. Flip the power switch to the on (I) position. The power switch should light up.
    • Power switch lights up: Check if the controller UI board lights turned on. If not, continue.
    • Power switch light doesn't turn on:
      1. Turn off and unplug the grill.
      2. Remove the power panel by unscrewing the 4 Phillips screws holding it in place.

      3. Disconnect and reconnect the wiring connections.
      4. Plug in the griddle and flip the power switch.
        • If the switch doesn't light up, replace the power panel.
        • If the switch lights up, verify the other lights turn on and the IGNITE button works.

2. Use a 9V battery to check if the transformer is working.

Using a 9V battery bypasses the transformer. The grill's behavior while battery powered will help determine where the power issue lies.

  1. Turn off and unplug the grill.
  2. Install a 9V battery into the battery case on the power panel.
  3. Keeping the grill unplugged, flip the power switch to the ON (I) position.
    • Note that the power switch (and any other lights) won't light up. Powering your griddle with a 9V battery only delivers power to the ignitor.
  4. Press the IGNITE button on the control UI board.
    1. Ignitor produces a clicking sound: The controller UI board is working. Continue troubleshooting to check the transformer wiring connections.
    2. Ignitor doesn't produce a clicking sound: There may be a loose wiring connection between the power panel and the controller UI board.
      1. Flip the power switch to the OFF (o) position.
      2. Find the control housing underneath the grill. Remove the housing panel by unscrewing the two thumb screws holding it in place.
      3. Disconnect and reconnect all connection points.
      4. Flip the power switch to the ON (I) position and press IGNITE.
      5. If the ignitor still doesn't click, replace the controller UI board.
  5. Turn off the griddle.
  6. Find the control housing underneath the grill. Remove the housing panel by unscrewing the two thumb screws holding it in place.
  7. Disconnect and reconnect the transformer's connections to the power panel.
  8. Plug in and turn on the grill.
