Alert: Lid Open

What's in This Article?

If your Touchscreen grill shows a “LID OPEN” message on the screen, it’s simply letting you know that the lid appears to be open. This message is part of the grill’s smart safety features and can be triggered by a few different conditions — most commonly, the lid being left open. In rare cases, it may appear due to a sensor or magnet not being detected. This guide will walk you through quick steps to confirm everything is working as expected so you can continue grilling with confidence.

What Causes a Lid Open Alert?

Your grill thinks the lid is open. This can happen if:

  • The lid is actually open
  • The lid sensor is faulty
  • The magnet is missing or damaged
  • Your grill’s firmware is outdated
Note: This is not an error — just a message to let you know.

Will My Grill Still Cook?

Yes! Your grill will continue cooking, but performance may be reduced.

What Should I Do?

If the lid is open

  • Close the lid.

If the lid isn't open

  1. Check your grill's firmware. Make sure your grill is updated to the latest version.
  2. Let the grill cool down. Ensure it’s finished its shutdown cycle.
  3. Run a SELF-TEST to ensure there are no disconnects.
    1. Go to:  MENU > MAINTENANCE & CARE > SELF-TEST. The test will likely take about 10 seconds to complete.
    2. If the lid test fails, proceed to the next step.
  4. Remove the hopper service panel and smart combustion coverhopper service panel

Before removing the hopper service panel: check your grill’s manufacturer date

  • Before June 2023 (2305): Remove the access panel using an impact driver to prevent the possibility of stripped screws. If you don't have one on-hand, contact Traeger Support.
  1. Once you have the hopper service panel removed:
  2. Confirm all connectors are fully connected manually.
    1. Use a manual impact driver to remove the hopper service panel and smart combustion cover.
    2. Confirm the connections on the motherboard are secure, specifically the cable connection to the lid/light sensor.
    3. Confirm wiring is not pinched, cut, or damaged inside the hopper.
  3. If the error continues, contact Customer Support.
