How to Season Touchscreen Grills

What's in This Article?

Here you will find information on seasoning your grill for the first time after purchase.

What Does Seasoning Do?

Seasoning your grill is a crucial step to complete prior to cooking any food on the grill in order to ensure the best flavor, optimal performance, and proper and safe grill operation. The seasoning process primes the auger with pellets and utilizes high heat to burn off any remaining manufacturing oils.

How Long Does Seasoning Take?

The seasoning process can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours to complete. These grills are larger and will take more time to heat up. You will need to wait for the grill to reach 450°, which can take around 45 minutes to complete, then run the grill for 45 (additional) minutes at 450° to fully season the grill.

How to Season your Touchscreen Grills

New Timberline grills have an easy-to-follow seasoning process. Different from previous Traeger grills, these grills no longer need to prime the auger beforehand.

You can season your new Timberline in two ways: Manually or Following the onboarding experience.

Option 1: Follow the Onboarding Experience

  1. Check the firepot.
    • Remove the cardboard from under the firepot. New firepots have a piece of cardboard underneath the firepot to protect it during shipping.
    • Make sure the firepot is installed correctly, and not caught on the auger tube.
  2. Plug in and turn on the grill.
    • Press the main power button located on the front of the grill to ON.
      • The display can take a few seconds to illuminate. You may also tap anywhere on the screen to wake up the controller.
    • The home screen will land on an automatic onboarding experience. Follow the prompts to quickly and easily get your grill seasoned, connected, and set up for your first cook.
  3. Press the touchscreen or press the dial on the SEASON YOUR GRILL screen.

    •  NOTE: It is important to leave the grill alone during the seasoning process and not tinker with the temperature or open the lid. This will simply delay the process further.
  7. Seasoning Complete.
    • When the seasoning cycle is finished, the controller will initiate a full shutdown cycle.
      • The shutdown cycles prevent future adverse effects and get your grill properly set up for the next cook.
      • NOTE: Always initiate a shutdown cycle after each and every cook. To do this, either hold the selection dial for 3 seconds or turn the set temperature down to Shutdown and press to select.

Option 2: Seasoning when bypassing the Onboarding Experience

Season via Controller

  2. Plug in and turn on the grill.
    • Press the main power button located on the front of the grill to ON.
