What is rust?

Rust is a reddish-brown oxide formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Rust can occur on iron and steel.

Rust can occur both inside and outside of the grill. It can happen on any surface that is iron or steel.

What causes rust on a grill?

Below are the most common causes of rust on a grill:

  • Exposure to moisture: If a grill is exposed to rain, snow, or high humidity it can lead to rusting.
  • Lack of cleaning: Not cleaning the grill regularly can allow ash and food particles to accumulate. This can cause rust.
  • Food Residue: Food particles and grease left on the grill can attract moisture which can lead to rust.

How can I prevent rust on my grill?

  • Regular Cleaning: Cleaning the grill after each use to remove food particles and grease from the grates and other surfaces. For more information, see Cleaning & Maintaining a Pellet Grill.
  • Covering the Grill: Covering the grill between uses will protect it from moisture and the elements.
  • Seasoning the Grill Grates/Cooktop: Applying a thin layer oil to the grill grates/cooktop after cleaning will create a protective barrier against moisture.
  • Deep Cleaning: Periodically doing a deep clean on the grill, removing and thoroughly cleaning the internal parts and well as thoroughly cleaning the outside surface will help prevent rust from forming. For more information, see Cleaning & Maintaining a Pellet Grill.

How to Deal with Existing Rust

  • Light Rust: Scrub the affected area with a grill brush. Traeger All-Natural Grill Cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda can also be used.
  • Severe Rust: If rust becomes severe enough, it can lead to rust through causing a hole in the material. For more information, contact Customer Support.
