What to do if your Woodridge Series Traeger grill's controller screen displays a red X.
What does a red X mean?
A red X on a Woodridge Series controller means the grill was attempting to download a firmware update, but the download failed.
When the controller is actively trying to download the firmware update, the controller will show a blue spinning circle or ring around the perimeter of the controller. If the update fails, the screen then displays a red X.

How to Resolve a Failed Firmware Update
If the grill fails to download the firmware update, populating a red X on the controller display:
- Power cycle your grill.
- The grill should start attempting to download the firmware update again (indicated by the blue spinning circle/ring animation).
- If the grill downloads the firmware successfully, it will display a green checkmark and then reboot itself automatically.
If the firmware update fails again (red X), or if the grill doesn't start the download automatically (no spinning blue animation), the grill is most likely not connected to WiFi or has low signal strength.
- Verify your grill is connected to WiFi. Open the Traeger app and confirm your grill shows online.
- Check your grill's WiFi signal strength. In the Traeger app, Open grill dashboard > Settings > WiFi > Signal Strength. The grill's signal strength should be ideally between -30 and -70dBm.
- If your grill is connected to WiFi and the signal strength is good, contact customer support.
