For grills running hotter than set, check for errors or fires first. Then review weather, startup, lid openings, Super Smoke, component installation, temperature sensor accuracy, and firmware. Small temperature swings are normal; contact Traeger Support if issues persist.
Your Traeger is designed to maintain an average cooking temperature, so some temperature fluctuation during a cook is completely normal. These temperature changes help create smoke and deliver the wood-fired flavor Traeger grills are known for.
Touchscreen grills consistently running hotter than the set temperature are usually easily explained. Common causes include startup procedure, frequent lid opening, hot weather, outdated firmware, Super Smoke mode, incorrectly installed internal components, or an issue with the temperature sensor.
What to Check if Your Grill Is Running Too Hot
Before you begin:
- Did you get a High Temp Error (Error 0001)? If so, go to our High Temp Error article instead.
- Did your grill catch fire? If so, first check out Grill Fires. Then, follow the steps in this article to identify the cause and get your grill cooking at the correct temperature again.
Let's examine a few other things that could contribute to your grill running hotter than desired:
Cooking in Hot Weather or Direct Sunlight
Direct sunlight and high outdoor temperatures can increase grill temperatures, especially when doing low temperature cooks.
Remember: your grill is a large, dark metal box. Much like leaving your car in the sun, a grill in direct sunlight can get to extreme temperatures even when it isn't turned on. Once you ignite it, you're adding even more heat, meaning you may find it challenging to maintain lower temperatures.
On warm or sunny days, try:
- Moving your grill out of direct sunlight, especially when grilling at lower temperatures.
- Cooking during cooler parts of the day.
- Cook to temperature rather than by time.
- Keep your grill clean, especially from grease buildup.
- Allowing the controller time to stabilize temperature before adding food or opening the lid.

Starting Your Grill Incorrectly
How you start your grill affect grill temperatures long after ignition. Common startup missteps to avoid include:
- Leaving the lid open when igniting and during preheat.
- Opening the lid or loading food before the grill finishes preheating.
- Starting the grill with the heat shield, drip tray, and grill grates removed.
- Having excess pellets in the firepot during startup.
Before starting your cook, make sure the firepot is clean, all internal components are properly installed, and the grill lid is closed. And always follow the recommended startup process for your grill model.

Opening the Lid Too Often
Every time the lid is opened, heat escapes. The grill may respond by feeding additional pellets to recover temperature, which can cause temporary temperature spikes.
Try to keep lid openings to a minimum whenever possible, Remember, "If you're lookin', you ain't cooking'."

Using Super Smoke
When Super Smoke is enabled, temperature swings are expected and may exceed normal operating variance. You may notice your grill's temperature raising above and below set temp more than expected when using this feature.
Best Practice: Turn on Super Smoke after the grill finishes preheating
Grill Components Not Installed Correctly
Missing, improperly installed, or severely damaged parts can cause the grill to run hotter than intended.
The following components help regulate heat inside the grill:
- Heat shield
- Drip tray
- Firepot
Severe damage would include holes, rusted or burnt through the heat baffle or drip trays. This would NOT include general wear and tear, such as minor discoloring or warping.
Temperature Sensor Reading Incorrectly
Your grill's thermocouple — the temperature sensor inside the grill barrel — helps the grill maintain your set temp by communicating with the controller so the grill knows when to feed more pellets to the fire.
It's rare for your thermocouple to read incorrectly. Under ideal conditions, the temperature displayed when you first ignite the grill should read roughly within 20°F (10°C) of the current outside temp.
Keep in mind that direct sunlight and hot weather conditions can affect the reading. If the sensor is exposed to these conditions, do not assume it is faulty based on the ambient temperature reading alone.
If you believe your sensor is reading way off when not exposed to direct sunlight or other extreme conditions, contact Traeger Support for assistance.
Outdated firmware
Outdated firmware can affect temperature performance.
- Make sure your grill is running the latest firmware.
- Confirm your Traeger App is up to date.
- Visit the Firmware page to verify current versions.
