How to Replace an Ignitor on an IronTop Griddle

Step-by-step instructions for how to replace the ignitor and ignitor wire on your Traeger IronTop 2-Burner and IronTop-4 Burner flat top grill. Includes part numbers, required tools, and estimated completion time.

Replacement Steps

Remove the Old Ignitor

Before Performing Any Replacement Steps:

  • Turn burner knobs to OFF position, close the propane tank
  • Ensure the grill is completely cooled
  • Open the lid and remove the cooktop
  1. Remove the burner knobs. Pull the knobs off and remove the x2 screws underneath each knob.

  2. Remove the front plate. Unscrew the screws along the top edge of the front plate. These are located underneath the notches along the inside top of the front plate.
    • The 2-burner grill has 3 screws to remove, the 4-burner grill has 4 screws to remove.

  3. Unscrew and remove the x2 screws underneath the front plate. There are 3 screws to remove on the 4-burner grill: 1 on each side and 1 in the middle.

  4. Remove the front plate.
  5. Disconnect the ignitor wire. Remove the gas manifold by pulling it out of the burner tube holes and unplugging the ignitor wires from the manifold.
Important: Use caution when disconnecting the ignitor wire from the ignitor so you don't damage the connectors. Using needle nose pliers can help make this process smoother.

  1. Remove the burner that the ignitor being replaced is attached to. 
  • For 2-Burner grill, unscrew the burner and lift up.

  • For 4-Burner grill, remove the hairpin and lift the burner off of the notch.

  1. Remove the ignitor. Unscrew the x1 screw holding the ignitor in place.

  2. Slide the ignitor out of the hole.
Important: Use caution when removing the ignitor from the bracket as the metal around the hole may be sharp.

Install the New Ignitor

  1. Replace the ignitor. Slide the new ignitor through the ignitor hole and attach to burner tube with x1 screw.

  2. Reattach the burner tube inside the grill. 
    • For 2-Burner grill replace the x2 screws.

    • For 4-Burner grill, replace the burner on the notch and slide the hairpin back in.

  3. Thread the ignitor wire through the hole and reattach to the gas manifold.

  4. Slide the gas manifold back into burner tubes.

  5. Replace the front panel. Place the front panel on and replace the top screws. These are located underneath the notches along the inside top of the front plate.

    • The 2-burner grill has 3 screws to replace, the 4-burner grill has 4 screws to replace.
  6. Replace the x2 screws underneath the front plate.
    • There are 3 screws to replace on the 4-burner grill: 1 on each side and 1 in the middle.
  7. Replace the x2 burner knob screws.

  8. Replace the burner knobs.
  9. Test the ignitor for a spark
    1. Turn the burner knob to test the ignitor for a spark.
    2. The spark should touch the burner tube. 
    3. See image below for correct ignitor placement.

  10. Replace the cooktop and close the lid.
