This article will cover what a HEr: High error Reading is and what to do if you get this error code on your grill. 

 

HEr stands for "High Error Reading'" and is specific to AC (non WiFIRE) grills.

 

SYMPTOM

The grill's controller displays, HEr, and enters a shutdown cycle.

 

CAUSE

The grill's temperature exceeds 550°F/287°C, usually due to a grill fire/flare up.

Most AC grills have a max temperature setting of 450°F/232°C. When your grill reaches over 550°F, the grill will automatically shut off as a safety precaution, and the controller will display "HEr." 

 

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET AN HEr

Typically, an HEr error will resolve on its own when you restart your grill.

Even if the error goes away upon restarting, we advise you to go through the following checklist to ensure your grill continues to work optimally. This checklist will also help you understand why you got a HEr.

  1. Was there a fire?
    1. Because a HEr occurs when the grill temperature exceeds 550°F, if you had a grill fire, you will more than likely get a HEr. 
  2. When did you last clean your grill?
    1. Frequently cleaning your grill is vital to a successful cook, and excessive ash and grease can very quickly affect your grill's ability to read temperature accurately.

  3. Did you start your grill correctly?
      1. The correct process for starting your grill will vary depending on your model. Please visit the Grill Startup Guide to find your proper start-up procedure.​​​​​​​
  4. Did you shut down your grill correctly on the previous cook?
    1. If your grill was not put through the proper shutdown cycle on your previous cook, there may have been excess pellets in the firepot from your last cook, which could cause the temperature to spike upon ignition.
  5. Did you receive a LEr on your previous cook?
    1. If you received a LEr (Low Error Reading) message during your previous cook, and this is your first time starting your grill since then, you might get a HEr message. This can happen as the grill tries to burn off any additional pellets built up during the last cook.
    2. To prevent this, if you get a LEr message, make sure you clean out the firepot before attempting to reignite your grill. 
  6. Are the internal parts of the grill installed correctly?
    • HEr messages can occur when the insides of the grill are not in place (drip tray, heat baffle, grill grates) correctly.
      1. Make sure all the internal parts of the grill are placed correctly in the grill and are undamaged.
  7. Check if any of the internal components are damaged.
    1. Ensure there is no damage to the drip tray, heat baffle, or firepot, such as significant warping or rusted holes.
    2. If there is damage, please contact Customer Service.
  8. Is the grill reading temperature correctly?
    • Ensure the grill is reading the temperature accurately by checking the RTD. To verify this, follow the steps below:
    • Note - the grill must be turned off and cooled down.
      1. Observe if the grill is in direct sunlight, particularly during the Summer months.
        1. If yes, consider moving your grill to a shaded area.
          • Grills are enclosed metal containers that, much like cars, will retain heat and can be significantly hotter than the outside temperature.
      2. Check for Damage
        1. Verify that your RTD temperature sensor is not bent or chipped.
        2. A broken, bent, or chipped RTD can still work perfectly fine. Continue additional validation steps.
      3. Is the RTD touching another part of the grill?
        1. If so, gently bend the RTD away from the wall or object it touches and continue troubleshooting.
      4. Check the Ambient Air Temperature
        1. Turn on the grill and take note of what temperature shows up on the controller.
        2. Compare this to the outside temperature.
          1. A working RTD should read within 20°F/10°C of the ambient air temperature.
            • As noted above, grills in direct sunlight and being used during the peak of summer months will likely read temperatures beyond our accepted variance.
          2. If your grill is reading more than 20°F/10°C off the local temperature, please contact Customer Service.
