TIMBERLINES: DISPLAY WILL NOT TURN ON

What to do if your new Timberline or Timberline XL's display won't turn on.

  • NOTE: Some customers refer to this as "sleep mode," but Timberline (XL) models do not have this as an official mode. Customers generally refer to "sleep mode" when the controller doesn't "wake up."

HOW TO DIAGNOSE AN UNRESPONSIVE DISPLAY

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • It is crucial to follow these steps in order for these troubleshooting steps to be able to work correctly. Please do not jump sections.

1. POWER CYCLE THE GRILL

A small percentage of new grills have an issue where the display won't turn on. This is easy to resolve by power cycling the grill. The majority of display issues have been resolved by power cycling the grill.

  1. Does the grill turn on as normal?

2. CHECK AC POWER SUPPLY

  1. Is the main power switch illuminated?
    1. Yes? Continue to Step 3: Check Firmware/Allow Firmware To Update
    2. No? Is there power from the outlet?
      1. No? Check household wiring, circuit breakers, and GFCI outlets.
      2.  Yes? Is the power cord undamaged and firmly inserted into the C14 socket on the back of the grill?
        1. No? Replace the power cord if necessary and insert it fully into the outlet and connector on the grill.
        2. Yes? Are the 120VAC wires attached to the proper terminals inside the grill?
          1. Not Sure? Contact Customer Support for further assistance.
          2. Yes? Contact Customer Support for further assistance.

3. CHECK FIRMWARE/ALLOW FIRMWARE TO UPDATE

  1. Has the grill been paired and is currently connected to a WiFi network?
    1. No? - Continue to Step: 4: Check Power Supply Board
    2. Yes? - Check Firmware: Is FW up to date?
 (Check grill data or app)
      1. Not Sure? - Go to traeger.com/status to see the current firmware version.
      2. No? - How long has the display been unresponsive?
        1. Fewer than 3 hours? - Wait until three hours have passed (This is important because it will take at least three hours for all firmware update to apply).
        2. 3+ hours? - Power Cycle the grill. Does the screen now turn on?
          1. No? - Wait an additional three hours for the updates to finish applying, then move to number 3 below: 6+ hours. 
          2. Yes? - Everything looks good.

        3. 6+ hours? - Power Cycle the grill. Does the screen now turn on?
    3. Yes? - Everything looks good.

          1. No? - Continue troubleshooting moving on to (the next) Step: 4: Check Power Supply Board.

4. CHECK POWER SUPPLY BOARD

  1. Is the Power Supply Board LED illuminated? 
    1. No? - Unplug the grill; Contact Customer Support for further assistance.
    2. Yes? - Continue troubleshooting and move on to (the next section) Step 5: Internal DC Power Check.
    3. There is no LED! (This is the more commonly seen version) - Traeger Dealer Locator - Traeger Deals®

5. INTERNAL DC POWER CHECK

  1. Is the Motherboard LED Off, Blinking, or On (steady)?
    1. On (steady)? Turn grill off; Verify wiring connections from Motherboard and Display are secure; 
Power Cycle grill.
      1. Does the Display turn on, and is it active?
        1. Yes? Everything looks good.

        2. No? Unplug connections and reconnect to ensure a secure connection.
          1. See if there is a nearby Service Dealer by going to Traeger Dealer Locator - Traeger Deals® and searching for a dealer near you.
          2. Contact Customer Support for further assistance. 
    2. Blinking? Continue troubleshooting and move on to (the next section) Step 6: Component and Sensor Check.
    3. OFF? Check wiring and connections from Power Supply Board to Motherboard (24VDC); Power Cycle grill.
      1. Is the Motherboard LED Off, Blinking, or On (steady)?
        1. On (steady) - Does the Display turn on and is active?
          1. Yes? Everything looks good.

          2. No? Unplug connections and reconnect to ensure a secure connection.
            1. See if there is a nearby Service Dealer by going to Traeger Dealer Locator - Traeger Deals® and searching for a dealer near you.
            2. Contact Customer Support for further assistance.
        2. OFFUnplug connections and reconnect to ensure a secure connection.
          1. See if there is a nearby Service Dealer by going to Traeger Dealer Locator - Traeger Deals® and searching for a dealer near you.
          2. Contact Customer Support for further assistance.
        3. Blinking? Move to (the next section) Step 6: Component and Sensor Check: Test for Component Fault using the elimination process/wire swap test.

6. COMPONENT AND SENSOR CHECK

Test for Component Fault using elimination process/Wire swap test steps below:

  1. Turn the main power switch OFF.
  2. Unplug the Sensor Harness connector from Motherboard
 ("Smart Comb" connector on Motherboard).
  3. Turn the main power switch ON.
    1. Does the Display turn on, and the LED on the Motherboard turn on steady?
      1. Yes? Turn grill OFF and plug Sensor Harness connector back into the Motherboard; unplug Lid Sensor from Sensor Harness; power grill ON.
        1. Does the Display turn on, and the LED on the Motherboard turn on steady?
          1. Yes? Replace Lid Sensor/Light
          2. No? Replace Sensor Harness and test
            1. Does the Display turn on, and the LED on the Motherboard turn on steady?
              1. Yes? Everything looks good. 
Get Traegering!
              2. No? Turn the main power switch OFF; move to the next step (2). 
      2. No? Turn the main power switch OFF again.
      3. Ensure Lid Sensor and Sensor Harness connectors are plugged back in; unplug another component or sensor connector.
      4. Turn the main power switch ON.
        1. Does the Display turn on, and the LED on the Motherboard turn on steady?
          1. Yes? The component that prevents the Motherboard from booting up is the most likely cause—> Contact Customer Support for further assistance.
          2. No? Turn the main power switch OFF (again).
          3. Plug the sensor/component connector back in, and unplug another component or sensor connector.
          4. Turn the main power switch ON.
            1. Does the Display turn on, and the LED on the Motherboard turn on steady?
              1. Yes? The component that prevents the Motherboard from booting up is the most likely cause—> Contact Customer Support for further assistance.
              2. No? Turn the main power switch OFF and cycle through ALL the components/sensors until all are checked.
              3. Plug the sensor/component connector back in, and unplug another component or sensor connector.
              4. Turn the main power switch ON.
                1. Does the Display turn on, and the LED on the Motherboard turn on steady?
                  1. Yes? The component that prevents the Motherboard from booting up is the most likely cause—> Contact Customer Support for further assistance.
                  2. No, but ALL the components/sensors have been checked? Continue troubleshooting and move on to the next section, Step 7: Replace System Boards.

7. REPLACE SYSTEM BOARDS

  1. The Display does NOT turn on, and the LED Motherboard is NOT steady—>Contact Customer Support for further assistance.
