TIMBERLINE TEMPERATURE READING BACKWARD

What's in This Article?

What to do if your Timberline display shows the temperature going down as the grill is heating up/increasing in temperature.

SYMPTOM

As the grill preheats, the temperature on the controller display goes down instead of up, even though the grill's actual temperature is going up.

CAUSE

Typically, the thermocouple wires are installed backward.

RESOLUTION

  1. Power off and unplug your grill.
  2. Remove the hopper access panel.
  3. Find the yellow thermocouple connector.
  4. Verify that the + and - signs match the + and - on the motherboard.temp_backward-thermocouple_match.png
    1. If incorrect, disconnect and connect correctly. If the grill still reads temperature backward, continue to the next step.
    2. Turn on the grill and ignite to verify the temperature goes up correctly.
      1. If it still goes down, continue to the next step.
  5. Swap the thermocouple wires.
    1. Unscrew the two Phillips-head screws that secure the wires to the connector.
    2. Switch the wire placement so the wire that was connected to the + is now connected to the -, and vice versa.
  6. Turn on the grill and ignite and confirm the temperature goes up.
